Every Wednesday and Friday I make the 10 minute trek to the Gold's Gym in American Fork to join the realm of the 40-somethings who, spurned by menopause and slowing metabolisms, all seem to spend the majority of their morning engulfed in the war against cellulite. Most wearing an indecent amount of spandex that shows the tell-tale signs of the aforementioned war being a lost effort.
In any case, these empty-nesters, devoid of the responsibility of feeding a small child, etc. have the privilege of arriving to the cycle class early. An hour and a half early. Apparently oblivious to the sign on the door that says "No Saving Bikes" I constantly find myself arriving to class 25 minutes early only to find an empty room full of bikes adorned with small towels, Kirkland water bottles and the odd paper towel stuffed into the handlebars; each item declaring, "You Cannot Use This Bike"
...sigh. What's a mother with an hour window of workout time to do?
Most times I'll find the most unassuming article of bike-saving and toss it aside before the class gets full. Something that could have easily fallen to the side on its own in order to maintain the facade of innocence (can't you just see me batting my eyelids at anyone claiming that I am a bike theif?). In every case (until now) I've managed to 'steal' the bike of someone who is timid enough to let it slide. Or just arrived so early to claim their spot that they forgot about it entirely.
Until today. 915 rolls around and I feel once again gratified that I made it unscathed by the obviously territorial stay-at-home-moms. Until class starts and I guess my ticket was up. A spandex-clad lady starts telling me how I stole her friend's bike all while attempting to move my jacket and keys away from said bike. After pointing out the sign ON THE DOOR, not-so-politely telling her that, "if she touches my stuff one more time...", using the occasional swear word to get my point across and finally telling her that if it was her friend's bike then she should mind her own business and have her friend take it up with me.....it turns out her friend wasn't as perturbed as she obviously thought she should have been and left me to my bike without another word.
Go figure.
So, ladies of Gold's Gym...keep fighting the good fight. You win this time. Because I am never going to a Wednesday Cycle class again, lest I have to get there at 730am...or start throwing punches.
Don't make me go all Mike Tyson on y'all...
